This morning, I finished my final Christmas knitting order.* I wore my plushy slippers, listened to christmas radio, and sat in front of the sweet little tree I had bought on a whim while walking by a Christmas tree lot the night before.

And with that, my first Christmas season as the proprietor of a small retail business comes, largely, to a close.

Hooray! I feel like I could sleep for days.

In the past month, I knit up and sold:
13 pairs of hand warmers
18 plushy knit bears, dragons, whales and other animals and dolls
24 miniature knit fairy tale dolls

Some parts of each project took total concentration, but some were long straight stretches that just took time. I figured out how to knit while doing nearly anything. I knit while watching sports games on tv, while listening to audio books, while on trains, while waiting in line at the post office, while skyping with my sister, while solving crossword puzzles with my family, while walking, while reading. I still haven’t mastered knitting and eating at the same time…

Through all the hard work, I don’t know when I’ve ever had so much fun! I enjoyed aspects of the business I never thought would be my thing. Who could have thought I’d like wrapping and packaging orders so much? I found it delightful to develop a wrapping and packaging system that was environmentally friendly, distinctly festive, and uniquely Yarn Birdy.

I’m going to take things a little bit slower for the next couple of days. I want to reflect on the things I learned from this season, and my little shop (and blog) are in need of some gentle revamping and those things can’t be rushed. I am so, so excited to continue building my business.

*I’m still taking orders, absolutely! They just wont get to your house until after Christmas.
