I’ve been having a rough couple of weeks. I’ve had to move, change some relationships, and am searching for a new job. The emotions and the stress have made me often grumpy and always exhausted. I haven’t had the energy to enjoy much.

The interesting thing is, I have discovered three unexpected things have brought me pure, simple pleasure, no matter my state of mind. They’re not the things I expected to be so important to me, but they work to give me comfort and a smile every time.

1. a shot of fresh squeezed orange juice
The juice of one orange just about fills a shot glass and it is heavenly, sweet and thirst-quenching.

2. listening to a baseball game on my funky old radio headphones while on a walk
I’m an A’s fan, so I thought that I’d be crushed once they were out of the play offs, but it turns out, any baseball teams will do to raise my spirits. It’s about the energy of the radio announcers: their skill in allowing me to visualize a game, the absurdity of the baseball statistics they can spout out as if they’re walking encyclopedias. I’m voting for the St. Louis Cardinals this World Series, since, you know, they’re birdys.

3. coffee. Lots and lots of coffee.
It’s not about the caffein, in fact I switch to decaf by my second cup. It’s about the warmth on my hands as I clasp the drink, the aroma of the steam swirling out of the cup, and the rich, bitter flavor.

What are the simple things in your life that are surprisingly comforting?
